The former mayor of Sheffield, Len Cope, has died at the age of 87, reports The Sheffield Star.

At the age of 62, after 23 years in local politics, he became the first mayor of the newly-formed Sheffield DC, serving for the term 1974-75.

He also served as a member of South Yorkshire CC and was a keen trade unionist and a member of the Municipal and General Workers Union.
