A leading Shetland Isles councillor has suggested that the council could use its £6.3 million stake in Shell to try to influence the oil company's policies on Nigeria.

Convenor Canon Lewis Smith said he was speaking in a personal capacity.

Chief executive Malcolm Green said the council would normally try to influence policy, 'but first and foremost the council is required to invest for the benefit of its community'.
