Ministers are preparing to compromise on plans to clamp down on early retirement deals for teachers reports the Guardian (p9).

Education secretary Gillian Shephard has denied a climbdown as a teachers' union yesterday won the right to challenge her in court.

But Graham Lane, chair of the AMA said that everyone agreed the status quo could not continue.

'If the change was moved to September and local authorities were allowed to agree reduced pensions for teachers who retired early as an option that would calm the situation down, I think we have a good chance of that,' he told the paper.
