When education secretary Gillian Shephard visits a school in her constituency today, she is guaranteed a frosty reception, reports the Independent (p3).

Weeting primary school in Thetford, Norfolk is so cold that children wear coats indoors and so run down that its thatched roof attracts rats and mice.

A Norfolk CC spokesman told the paper that the authority had made an urgent application to the DFEE for permission to borrow money to rebuild Weeting this year but had been turned down.

The council has a£36m backlog of school repairs, he said.
