A Scottish sheriff officer has been severely disciplined by his firm for threatening a poll tax defaulter with police action while carrying out warrant sale procedures, the Herald reports (p2).

After complaints the firm, Stirling Park, has said its representative was acting without authority it was not the firm's practice to 'conduct its business in such a manner'.

The trouble arose when the sheriff officer served a poinding notice on a defaulter, adding the note: 'police assistance will be in attendance'. It is beyond the powers of police to assist sheriff officers other than to prevent any possible breach of the peace.
