Shropshire and Cambridgeshire CC have both welcomed John Gummer's announcement.

The emphasis on establishing unitary authorities has boosted Cambridgshire's expectations of the review.

'Our proposals announced last week to create two unitary authorities for Cambridgeshire have been reinforced by the Secretary of State's clear preference for the merger of districts and division of counties', said Chief Executive Gordon Lister.

Shropshire will benefit more directly from the speed-up of the review. County Chief Executive, Alan Barnish, said 'I think we shall all be relived that this review is to be completed sooner, as it will remove the uncertainty - not least over people's jobs.'
