Shropshire CC is to transfer its direct labour organisation, County Contracting, to John Doyle Group for an initial five-year period.

Under the terms of the contract - worth £50 m - all the DLO's staff will transfer to a subsidiary of the company which will be called Shropshire County Contracting.

Shropshire leader Sue Davis said: 'Although we would have preferred to keep County Contracting as part of the council, this would not have been in the long-term interests of the staff or the council.'

Shropshire chief executive Alan Barnish said: 'The government's rules for DLOs are very restrictive and we needed to look for an alternative arrangement if we wanted to retain the high quality of service and cost competitiveness.'
