Single mothers are to be housed in blocks of flats and buildings due for demolition and redevelopment under a government plan, the Times reports (p1).
The paper says the move is intended to end what is seen as an injustice in existing legislation that single parents get more favourable treatment on council waiting lists than single people and childless couples. Under the new system, says the Times, council houses would be allocated solely on the basis of housing need. Details would come in a white paper early next year.
The Times says (p5) that councils will be expected to house groups of young mothers in short life blocks of flats and encourage them to club together so some could go out to work while others looked after the children in a move which ministers believe could end the 'dependency culture' of life on state benefits.
