Housing Minister Sir George Young today welcomed the latest improvement in housebuilding starts.

Figures just published show that 15,300 dwellings were started in Great Britain in October 1993 compared with 11,600 in October 1992. In the latest three months, 45,700 dwellings were started, up 24 per cent on the same three months a year ago.

Sir George said: 'There has been a recovery in private sector starts since 1992, and the new levels have been sustained for some months. There are signs of a better housing market in recent months with firmer house prices and more site visits by prospective house- buyers.
