Amid allegations of sexual harassment of police officers, and the £130,000 compensation payment to a woman officer, North Yorkshire police authority yesterday decided to call in Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary David O'Dowd, and its own auditors, to investigate, The Independent reports (p3).

Police authority chair Angela Harris said she considered the settlement to 27-year-old Libby Ashurst, which is reported to include an annual pension of £18,000, to be fair.

The Daily Express (p1) says it has obtained an internal report which reveals that six out of 10 police officers in the cash-strapped North Yorkshire force are retiring on ill-health grounds.
