Polls of education committee members and chief education officers at Local Government Association regional meetings nationwide have established firm support for a standard six-term school year.

Graham Lane (Lab), chair of the LGA's education and lifelong learning executive, said the vast majority of respondents from over half of the nation's education departments were positive.

'This is an important milestone for the LGA because we firmly believe a standardised six-term year will help raise pupils' achievement levels,' he said.

Six short terms are expected to spread teachers' workloads more evenly.
