An Avon district council has charged full rates to a local skittles club, declaring that skittles is a game for pubgoers rather than a sport, reports the Daily Mail (p28).

Had skittles been a sport, the Saltford skittle club, near Bath, would have been successful in its application for full rates relief. However, the Wansdyke DC has told the club that skittles is a 'social activity mostly taking place in pubs', and handed them a £1,000 rates demand.

Mike Humphreys, of the Exiles, one of the many skittles teams competing in the area, said: 'It's definitely a sport. People don't sit around drinking all night.'

The Saltford skittle club will be appealing the decision.
