Southwark LBC has chosen Southwark Land Regeneration as its development partner for a£1bn overhaul of the Elephant and Castle.

SLR is a joint venture company between Godfrey Bradman & Associates and Frogmore Estates plc. SLR beat off competition from two other bids, the St George Consortium and the London Amsterdam/Countryside Consortium.

Work will now begin on a masterplan for the area, with development starting in 2002.

Southwark leader Stephanie Elsy said: 'The appointment of SLR is a major step forward in the transformation of Elephant and Castle.'

A team led by architects Koetter, Kim & Associates has been chosen to prepare the masterplan for the regeneration of Sheffield city centre.
