At least two meat traders from London's Smithfield market will get places on the council which controls the City of London, the Financial Times reports (p4, 27 November 1993).

The paper says that they are guaranteed at least two seat because on one ward which has four seats, the traders make up four of the six candidates.

The traders are standing in a number of wards as part of their bid to get on the council and then influence the way charges for Smithfield are set for stalls in a refurbished meat market.
