On the eve of the Scottish National Party's annual conference in Inverness, chief executive Michael Russell said:

'This last conference before the election will be up-beat and positive - the SNP have a string of electoral achievements behind us, and are determined to win the coming general election for Scotland.

'At 29%, the SNP are enjoying our highest pre-conference poll rating since 1977, and are better placed than ever before to translate our widespread support into seats.

'For the past five years - in every election and opinion poll - SNP support has been above 20%, and is now reaching 30%. The party have never achieved such a high level of support over such an extended period, and means that we are entering the general election campaign with our strongest, most sustained pre-election support ever.

'Everyone in the party is looking forward to an immensely enjoyable and productive conference - with important debates on the constitution, defence, the economy and rural affairs - which will provide us with a powerful springboard for the coming general election.'
