There are calls for better design of social housing and analysis of a new model for such accommodation in The Guardian (Society, p2).

The essay by Paul Barker of the Institute of Community Studies, which appears in the report of the Housing Design Awards to be announced tomorrow by the housing minister Hilary Armstrong, says the social housing that has worn best down the years is usually that which comes closest to the kinds of house people would have bought if they had the means to take out a mortgage.

'We urgently need a new model for what you might call 'good ordinary housing',' he concludes.
