Inspectors have praised Redbridge LBC's social services despite the department's low budget.

A joint team of Social Services Inspectorate/Audit Commission inspectors said the borough's provision had improved over the past three years by developing more effective care management and services for older people, children, families and mental health users. It found the prospects for continuing improvement were good.

But it added that the council 'still does not appear to give the same priority to social services funding as comparable authorities, in terms of share of the council budget and spending against SSA'.

Some groups are not being served consistently well and 'in these areas service response and [what is on offer] need to improve considerably', said the report.

Redbridge social services director John Drew said: 'The agenda for change represents a formidable challenge. But we are confident we will be able to meet this.'
