The convener of Edinburgh Council's social work committee has criticised media coverage of a case involving a male couple who are bringing up an American born child in the city.

The Herald reports (p1) that Brian Cavanagh demanded that the two carers be left alone: 'I suppose this is about prurience of the worst kind by people who don't think that people of the same gender can bring people up in an appropriate manner.

'This has nothing to do with sexual orientation. The press in our country wants to start to grow up a bit and show a sense of maturity, which has been noticeably absent in this case of surrogacy in a single sex relationship. I would hope the journalists who spent all weekend on this will spend time considering the number of kids who are uncared for, unloved, and ill treated, and also the issue of surrogacy.'

Edinburgh social work director Leslie McEwan has confirmed that the department has no interest in the matter, and no reason to get involved. 'There is no suggestion of a lack of parental care.'
