The Audit Commission will be able to carry out studies of social services departments under the provisions of a bill launched by the government last week .

The DoE said the provisions, which will also allow the commission to work with the Social Services Inspectorate, constituted part of its programme to implement Citizen's Charter principles in social services.

The Audit (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill will also allow councils to publish their performance indicators in free newspapers.

Under current rules, the indicators must be published in a paid-for newspaper.
