Government measures to eliminate 'political correctness' from the adoption process were described by Dave Burchell, assistant director of British Association of Social Workers, as 'election posturing'.

He added: 'the political support [we] require revels in every effort to discredit social work'.

The Guardian (p5) reported that the charity Barnados and the umbrella group British Agencies for Adoption and Fostering welcomed the changes.
