A new centre for government and common career path for civil service and council officers has got backing from the Society of Chief Personnel Officers.

Incoming president Rita Sammons said the concept of a centre for the public service, promoted by senior local government figures, would be a good way of 'creating real change and of putting into practice partnership working and ideas sharing' and 'making us all think about how our careers are developing'.

Local Government Association urban commission chairman Sir John Harman has championed the concept in a publication, and several prominent academics are also publicly supportive.

Ms Sammons said such a centre would create a shared public management ethos.
