The Society of Chief Personnel Officers voted on Wednesday to expand its membership from senior local government personnel practitioners to those working in the fire and police services.

SOCPO president Robert Cragg said it would bring members back into the 21-year-old society who left when police and fire were taken out of council control.

'[Police and fire authorities] are run by boards of elected members, their staff are on local authority terms of employment and often local authorities still provide their personnel services,' said Mr Cragg.

The society last extended its membership two years ago, when it decided to admit senior, rather than only chief, personnel officers. Its membership has since grown from 300 to 400.

'Our membership was a very narrow category,' said Mr Cragg.
