An investigation into sexual abuse at residential children's centres in the former Avon CC and Somerset CC could turn into the biggest of its kind, involving more than 20,000 children.
The inquiry, Operation React, started after an allegation last year about sexual abuse at Kingswood Assessment Centre in Avon in the mid-1970s.
Police are now also investigating Kingswood Secure Unit, as well as Olands Observation and Assessment Centre in Somerset, following a further allegation on 22 February.
Incident rooms have been set up in Bristol and Taunton and 30 officers are investigating. A 50-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the allegations concerning Olands and released on bail pending further investigation.
