Somerset set to report Tory MP

Somerset CC is set to report a Conservative MP to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards over his attacks on chief executive Alan Jones and other senior staff.

Bridgwater Tory MP Ian Liddell-Grainger has maintained a barrage of website attacks over the county’s Southwest One outsourcing deal with IBM (LGC - 30/10/08).

Sam Crabb (Lib Dem), Somerset’s portfolio holder for resources and finance, said: “His attacks are becoming a strategic risk and we plan to send a dossier to the commissioner. I do not want my officers bullied by an MP.”

He wrote to the MP: “Your false and repeated accusations are damaging the morale of senior officers”.

Applicants for senior posts had withdrawn because of Mr Liddell-Grainger’s campaign, Cllr Crabb claimed.

The MP said his campaign was against Mr Jones and corporate director of resources Roger Kershaw, not the whole council. “Both these men are generously remunerated some would say over-generously remunerated. If they can’t take the heat of justified criticism they should never have entered the kitchen in the first place,” he said.

The commissioner, John Lyon, oversees MPs’ code of conduct.
