Hundreds of villagers were on alert yesterday to repel a hippy invasion with Somerset CC accused of betraying the little community of Middlezoy, the Daily Express reports (p16).

The paper says that even gypsies from an existing Somerset CC site have joined with the local people to bar the hippies or new age travellers from a site which the county wants to prepare for them in the village.

The local gypsy leader Mike Hughes fears that his own site a quarter of a mile away from Middlezoy will be blighted if the New Age travellers transit site is built.

The case has been to the High Court twice but last week a judge at Bridgwater County Court ruled against villagers but expressed his sympathy and refused to award costs to Somerset CC.
