Conservative councillors at South Ribble BC have refused to vote for a motion upholding equality, claiming

other parties had turned it into a 'political football'.

They abstained from a vote emphasising the council's commitment to equality and saying it was 'saddened' by a former Tory councillor's claim that 'we should look after Christians and our own people first'.

The councillor, Geoff Demack, was suspended indefinitely by his local association and is now an independent.

He made his remarks in explaining why he had refused to sign a concordat on equality adopted by the council.

Council leader Howard Gore (Lab) said he proposed the motion to reaffirm the council's support for

equality after Mr Demack's comments and the Tories had 'abdicated responsibility' by abstaining.

Conservative leader Jim Breakell said Labour and the Liberal Democrats had discredited the concordat by making political capital out of Mr Demack's remarks.
