The TES (p2) reported on last week's High Court ruling that Southwark LBC can no longer stop the Friars School from opting out of local authority control.

John Patten, education secretary, gave the school permission to become grant-maintained from January 1 but the council considered this unreasonable and applied for a judicial review.

Mr Justice Laws had now ruled that the Education Secretary had no duty to consult the authority.
