Southwark LBC housing committee has asked officers to investigate the practicalities of pursuing rent debtors in foreign courts, reports the South London Press (p18).

The council's rent arrears is£826,212, which the authority may be forced to write off after tenants disappear abroad.

Southwark housing chair told the paper: 'We are keeping all options open. We have asked the officers to look into the costs of chasing those who have done a runner abroad after mounting up huge rent arrears.

'Obviously we'll not be throwing good money after bad so we'll be looking at the cost figures very carefully.

'If it's too difficult or expensive to track down someone we won't be chasing them. We want to hammer home rent arrears will not be tolerated.'
