A special squad of immigration officers, equipped with handcuffs and body armour, has been appointed by home secretary Jack Straw to track down and deport 'bogus' asylum-seekers, reported The Independent on Sunday (p6).
The home office believes there are more than 20,000 bogus asylum-seekers who have 'gone missing' rather than face being sent home.
The squad will intially work in east London, where large numbers of asylum-seekers are thought to be in hiding. As more officers are trained, it will investigate across the UK.
The squad hasbeen trained in arrest techniques by the Metropolitan Police, who are increasingly reluctant to become involved in removing people from their homes. In the past, immigration officers have been accompanied by police officers on visits to homes where asylum-absconders are believed to live.
