Speed cameras introduced a year ago in West London are helping to cut serious accidents and deaths in the area by over a third.

This is just one of the results to emerge from accident data collected in the nine months following the installation of the cameras.

Commenting, Steve Norris, Minister for Transport in London, said: 'Speeds have also dropped substantially - on Twickenham Bridge, for example, the number of drivers travelling over 60mph has fallen by a staggering 98% in the past year.

'The figures are broadly in line with TRL research which shows that a 1mph drop in average vehicle speeds leads to a 5% fall in accidents and a 7% fall in road deaths.
