Spending on regenerating run-down housing estates is more important than building new homes, according to a survey of 552 housing professionals, the Chartered Institute of Housing says.

The results showed regeneration of difficult-to-let estates, attacking the back-log of repairs, bringing empty properties back into use and re-modelling obsolescent stock were the top four spending priorities, followed by community safety and crime prevention, and investment in jobs and training.

Participants in the survey included local authorities, housing associations, consultants and funders.
