The Birmingham Post (January 6, p1) reported that a spoof letter has created fears of a dirty tricks campaign among Birmingham city council's Labour group.

The letter, purporting to be from the secretary of 'Birmingham city council right wing Labour group' is addressed to former education committee chairman Andy Howell and tells him that the 'group' has considered his request for electoral support in 1998's group elections.

Councillor Howell told the paper that the letter was something which had cropped up in the 'silly season' over Christmas and said: 'there are some members who would certainly be better advised to work in their constituencies rather than create malicious spoofs like this.'
