St Edmundsbury BC chief executive Richard Toft is retiring after suffering a heart attack last August.
Mr Toft is recovering from heart bypass surgery. He trained as a solicitor in private practice before joining local government with Haltemprice UDC in 1963, moving on to York and North Riding.
St Edmundsbury leader Derek Redhead (Con) said: 'Richard has devoted his working life to service in local government. This is service in the old-fashioned sense, where a strong belief in duty underpinned a lifetime of serving both councillors and the public. We all wish him well.'
