The Standard (p49) features the senior civil servant who today took control of a new office to run London who 'knows almost nothing about the city'.

Director of the Government Office for London, Robin Young, knows next to nothing about London, according to guest columnist David Walker, the BBC's urban affairs correspondent.

'He is, in true Whitehall fashion, an intellectually able amateur, that is to say a professional in the arts of political administration,' he writes.

The new Whitehall office brings together the existing regional offices of the departments of Trade and Industry, Transport, Employment and Environment, part of a government reform of regional and inner-city spending programmes.
