The Sunday Times this week launched a campaign aimed at raising standards in the country's homes for the elderly.

Health minister Paul Boateng ordered a departmental inquiry into a series of disclosures made in the newspaper (p4) after it placed undercover reporters in four homes to monitor the treatment and living standards experienced by elderly people.

'Most homes are caring and responsible but some are not', the paper said.

'Others are well meaning but find the daily struggle to care for their

residents an overwhelming strain'.
