A building development close to Stansted airport which was challenged in the high court by four parish councils, and been subject to two planning inquiries has been given the go-ahead by deputy prime minister John Prescott.

The Financial Times (Jan 10, p5) reported that although Felsted, Little Dunmow, Takeley and Birchanger parish councils opposed the development, which will include landscaping, a school, shops and other facilities along with houses, the project is needed to help Uttlesford DC and Essex CC meet new homes targets.

Planners say that around 2,500 new homes will be needed as Stansted airport expands.
