Grants for emergency planning and training will by cut by two per cent next year, the Home Office has told the Association of County Councils.

The Times (p4) quotes Essex CC public safety board chair Nigel Baker: 'The Stansted Airport incident shows that we need emergency planning and need it to work properly. We should be increasing the emergency planning budget, not cutting it'.

The civil defence grant makes up approximately two thirds of Essex's £500,000 emergency planning budget, the paper reports.
