We have now delivered an above inflation grant increase to local government for ten successive years, one which will ensure that they can provide a high level of service at an affordable cost.

Given this substantial investment in local government, we expect all authorities to budget prudently and not place excessive demands on their council taxpayers

There is no excuse for excessive council tax and spending increases.

Local government should be under no illusions; we will use our capping powers to deal with excessive increases, as we have done over the last two years.

We will publish our own final figures shortly.
