Trading standards officers at North Yorkshire CC are warning that services will be drastically reduced and some statutory responsibilities shelved as the departments £1.5m budget is cut by a third, the Yorkshire Post reports (p8).

Offices at Scarborough and Harrogate are being closed as part of the cuts.

The joint chairman of the public protection committee Geoff Rennie said: 'Some of our statutory responsibilities are going to have to go by the board.'

They include new legislation to tighten controls on hygiene in the milk and dairy industry, says the Post. Based on current staffing levels only 40 of the 1,740 dairy farms in the county will be visited in the next 12 months.
