Stoke on Trent City Council is to close a house in multiple occupation housing former psychiatric patients after inspectors found it unfit for human habitation.

A spokesman for the council said there had been concerns about the Clifton Hotel for some time but that the property had deteriorated badly over the past few months.

The property's owner, Trent Dale Investments, has told the council it will not contest the closure order.

Stoke officers believe the case highlights the need for a system of HMO licensing.
