Stoke-on-Trent City Council has unveiled the two selected bidders for its £250m Building Schools for the Future programme.
Balfour Beatty Construction Limited and Thomas Vale/Wates will deliver the scheme which involves building and refurbishing secondary and special schools throughout the city, including building five brand new academies.
Cabinet member for children and young people’s services, Ian Mitchell, said: “This is a key milestone for the BSF programme in the city and one which indicates to the public that we are now beginning to make real progress with the development of the whole scheme.”
Building Schools for the Future project director Tracy Penrose said: ” We are looking forward to working with these major companies, which have a wealth of experience in major, innovative building schemes for the education sector.”
Each contractor is expected to start construction work on their first site within the overall programme during the autumn of 2010.
