North Tyneside MBC is offering copies of its electoral register to firms for around £400, reports the Daily Mail (p24).

Tory leader Ian Gordon objected to the council asking people if they would like to buy it.

According to the paper, the Data Protection Unit said it had never heard of a council 'touting for business'.

The Home Office said there are no rules regarding the issue of touting for business.
