Stradford-on-Avon BC has been ordered to find room for an extra 900 homes which would nearly triple the size of a proposed housing development on a greenfield site, reports the Birmingham Post (p4).

But the council is saying that it will not co-operate with the government's demands to build more houses. Though senior officials admitted they could be forced to do so.

Sean O'Grady, the council's director of planning, told the paper: 'The secretary of state has incredible powers and can step in and there is an implied threat that he will.

'But it will automatically mean another ten acres of greenfield development will have to go because what brownfield sites there were have gone - I don't know where the government thinks they exist.'
