Strathclyde RC yesterday urged the government to appoint an independent commission on the future of Scottish local government, similar to the body now looking at England and Wales, the Scotsman reports (p4).

Strathclyde would be broken up under any of the four Scottish Office proposals for council change.

Presenting the region's response to the government's consultation on restructure, Convenor David Sanderson said: 'Strathclyde and the people it serves deserve nothing less than a commission. The council has shown consistently that it is an accountable and efficient local authority that should be allowed to continue and develop its services'.
