The Herald (p4) reports that the Fire Brigades Union in Strathclyde has called a meeting in Glasgow of all station and officer representatives to discuss strike action to fight proposed cuts of about£4m.

FBU secretary John McGhee is quoted: 'These cuts will cost lives. The fire board members are being forced by pressure from their own cash-strapped councils to reduce the fire service budget to the level of grant-aided expenditure, thereby risking firefighter's personal safety by slashing more than£1m from the brigade's health and safety budget.

'On top of these cuts, the brigade has still to find a further£1.5m in savings which will result in a dramatic reduction in the number of fire appliances, road rescue vehicles and high-reach appliances.' McGhee went on to tell the Herald that union members were disgusted with Scottish secretary Donald Dewar and the Labour leadership. He added:

'We will campaign to gain the support of councillors in rejecting the proposed budget. The FBU is confident the public does not wish the fire service cut to the bone and lives put at risk.'
