Strathclyde Passenger Transport Authority was yesterday promised a detailed breakdown within 10 days of the fees it will charged by Railtrack, the Independent reports (p6).

Strathclyde RC was also assured at a London meeting that charges are likely to be 10% lower than anticipated.

The council was threatening to withhold subsidies to support Scottish commuter rail services unless key conditions were met, including the breakdown of new charges.

The AMA warns in the paper that unless the seven regional transport authorities were given guarantees that the government would cover the increased costs of privatisation council tax payers would face higher bills.
