Firefighters in the Strathclyde area are to be balloted for strike action over cash cuts which could lead to 100 job losses and five rural station closures, reports The Herald (p8).

The cuts could also lead to the loss of 30 fire appliances, a Fire Brigades Union (FBU) meeting was told yesterday. The meeting decided to hold a ballot for strike action among the region's 2,700 firefighters if the proposed cuts are agreed at a Strathclyde fire board meeting on 12 February.

A Scottish Office spokeswoman said grants for fire brigades had been increased by£6m, or 3.4% for 1998/99, something she described as a 'very fair settlement'. Options for making the savings are covered in greater detail on page 15. These include not replacing turntable ladders designed to reach tall buildings on fire.
