The government will offer to increase the cash allowance offered to asylum seekers, alongside the vouchers that will replace social security benefits under its Immigration and Asylum Bill, according to The Financial Times (p11).

In a bid to quell a backbench revolt, Jack Straw, the home secretary, will offer to double the cash element of the package when the bill returns to parliament next Tuesday.

Government officials say the favoured option is to increse the weekly cash allowance for adults and children to£10 a week. Mr Straw will outline the concessions when he addresses the weekly parliamentary Labour Party meeting today.
