Board members of quangos should become more accountable, says a local government think tank, reports the Financial Times.(p6)

The study calls for a code of practice to increase the accountability of quangos, which have taken over some services previously provided by local authorities.

The code would mean giving details of board membership, including backgrounds and political allegiances. The study says quangos might also be required to hold meetings in public and provide greater access to information about their workings, says the paper.
