Subsidised housing inner city programmes are key targets for cuts in the government's review of public spending, according to the Sunday Telegraph.

The Department of the Environment is expecting to be one of four Whitehall departments singled out for scrutiny on the second stage of the spending review due to start later this year.

Michael Portillo, Treasury Chief Secretary, is likely to examine the £7.9bn spent on subsidised housing and the 'panoply' of inner city initiatives.

The Treasury itself and the court system will also be reviewed, the newspaper claims.
